Wrinkle Treatment with Botulinum Toxin (Botox)
The effects of botulinum toxin were first described in Germany by physician Justinus Kerner as early as 1815. Botulinum toxin type A was first used for cosmetic purposes in the late 1990s by Jean and Alastair Carruthers in Vancouver. In Germany, it has been approved for the cosmetic treatment of facial wrinkles since 2006.
Originally, botulinum toxin was used to treat conditions such as strabismus and in neurological medicine, including certain forms of muscle paralysis and conditions following a stroke. Today, it is also used for the treatment of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) affecting the hands, underarms and feet, as well as in the treatment of migraines and tension headaches.
Our facial expressions place considerable and repeated strain on the skin. Every day, we frown, raise our eyebrows and narrow our eyes when we smile or laugh. When we are young, the skin can generally compensate for these repeated movements without difficulty. As we age, however, the first expression lines often begin to appear on the forehead and around the eyes, becoming increasingly pronounced over time.

A Youthful Appearance with Natural Facial Expression
Botulinum toxin treatment is particularly effective for reducing the appearance of unwanted dynamic wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes and on the neck, with results becoming noticeable within just a few days.
Botulinum toxin has also become an established component of a number of other treatments. Dr Christian Metz offers the following range of Botox treatments in Munich:
- Aesthetic treatment of facial and neck wrinkles, particularly prominent or unwanted expression lines caused by facial muscle activity
- Correction of scar-related facial asymmetries as a complementary treatment following reconstructive surgery after accidents or tumour treatment
- Treatment of excessive and troublesome sweating of the underarms, hands and feet
- Treatment of chronic tension headaches and migraines

Three Questions for Dr Christian Metz About Botox Wrinkle Treatment in Munich
Are botulinum toxin injections dangerous?
When botulinum toxin is administered by an experienced physician, it should be regarded in the same way as any other medical treatment. For aesthetic purposes, botulinum toxin is administered locally in very small, precisely controlled doses. The quantities used are extremely small – typically only a few billionths of a gram – and do not contain toxic bacteria.
Botulinum toxin injections are a medical procedure and should therefore only be administered by a qualified physician.
Can Botox treatments be repeated indefinitely?
There are no known long-term adverse effects associated with appropriately administered Botox treatments over extended periods. Treatment can therefore be repeated at regular intervals if desired. Many patients choose to have Botox treatment two or three times a year.
Is it true that Botox can cause the eyebrows to droop?
As Botox temporarily reduces the activity of specific facial muscles, lowering of the eyebrows can occur depending on the treatment area and dosage. As the effects of the injection gradually wear off – usually after approximately three to four months – normal muscle function returns.
Botulinum toxin can also be used strategically to achieve a subtle elevation of the outer eyebrow. This technique is commonly referred to as a lateral brow lift.
